Windows 10 Support Has Ended: What East Gippsland Users Should Do Now

Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Computers still running Windows 10 continue to work, but they no longer receive free security updates, which makes them an increasing risk for banking, email and personal information.
The right response depends on whether your computer can run Windows 11. This guide shows how to find out and what your options are.
What the End of Support Means
- Your computer will not stop working, and your files are not affected
- Windows 10 no longer receives free security updates, so newly discovered weaknesses are not patched
- Over time, more software and websites will stop supporting Windows 10
- Antivirus alone does not replace operating system security updates
Check Whether Your PC Can Run Windows 11
- Open Windows Update. Go to Settings, then Windows Update. If your computer is eligible, it shows an option to upgrade to Windows 11.
- Use the PC Health Check app. Microsoft provides a free PC Health Check app that tells you whether your computer meets the requirements, and explains the reason if it does not.
- Know the main requirements. Windows 11 needs a supported processor, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, at least 4 GB of memory and 64 GB of storage. Many computers made since about 2018 qualify, and many older ones do not.
Your Options
- Eligible computer: back up your files, then upgrade to Windows 11 through Windows Update. We can manage the upgrade remotely.
- Not eligible but otherwise healthy: consider replacing it. A computer that cannot run a supported operating system is a security risk for banking and email.
- Not eligible and rarely online: if a computer must stay on Windows 10, keep it off sensitive accounts and limit what it is used for.
- Older computer you want to keep: a lightweight alternative operating system can extend its life, though it changes how everything looks and works.
Before You Upgrade
Back up your photos and documents first, and note down anything that is installed or signed in. A major upgrade is usually smooth, but a backup means nothing can be lost if it is not.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to keep using Windows 10?
It still works, but it no longer receives free security updates, so the risk grows over time. It is best to upgrade if your computer is eligible, or replace the computer if it is not.
Will upgrading to Windows 11 delete my files?
An upgrade through Windows Update normally keeps your files and programs. We still recommend a backup first, in case anything goes wrong.
Can you upgrade my computer remotely?
Yes, in most cases. We can check eligibility, back up your files and run the upgrade over a secure remote session.
Need a Hand?
